Armação de Pêra or Albufeira: which should you book?

Armação de Pêra and Albufeira sit 14 km apart on the same coast, but they are different holidays. Armação de Pêra is a quieter beach town in the municipality of Silves, with no municipal tourist tax. Albufeira is larger, louder and charges €2.00 per person per night in season.

Armação de Pêra is a quiet beach town in the municipality of Silves, about 14 km west of Albufeira by road, and Silves levies no municipal tourist tax while Albufeira charges €2.00 per person per night from April to October.123 That single line settles the question for a good number of the people who write to us. The rest of this page is the honest version of everything else.

We let four apartments in Armação de Pêra, so we are not a neutral party. We have tried to keep the sourced facts separate from our opinion, and to say plainly which is which.

How far is each town from Faro airport?

Faro airport to Armação de Pêra is about 53 km and about 45 minutes by car. Faro airport to Albufeira is about 46 km and about 37 minutes.4 Albufeira is the closer of the two, by roughly 6 km and 5 minutes. If a short first drive matters more than anything else, Albufeira wins that row and nothing else on this page will change it.

Our longer piece on getting from the airport covers transfers, taxis, hire cars and the bus in more detail: see Faro Airport (FAO) to Armação de Pêra.

Does Armação de Pêra have a tourist tax, and does Albufeira?

Armação de Pêra does not. It is in the municipality of Silves, which has not adopted a municipal tourist tax, so your stay with us carries no per-person, per-night municipal charge.1

Albufeira does. The Regulamento da Taxa Turística do Município de Albufeira was published in Diário da República, 2.ª série, n.º 84, on 30 April 2024 and came into force on 21 May 2024. The tax is charged per night, up to a maximum of 7 consecutive nights per stay, on guests aged 13 and over, on stays between April and October inclusive, in hotels, alojamento local, campsites and caravan parks.2 The rate is €2.00 per person per night.3

For two adults and two teenagers on a week in July, that is €56.00 added to an Albufeira booking and nothing added to an Armação de Pêra one. It is not a holiday-defining sum, but it is real money and almost nobody tells you about it before you book.

Full detail, including Lagoa's figures, is on our tourist tax page.

What are the beaches like in each town?

Armação de Pêra has one long, wide, south-facing sandy bay rather than a chain of coves. Praia de Armação de Pêra flew the Blue Flag in 2026, one of only two awarded sites in the whole municipality of Silves, and the bathing season there runs from 1 June to 30 September 2026.56 The same beach also carries the Instituto Nacional para a Reabilitação 'Praia Acessível' award for access and use by people with reduced mobility, and the Quercus 'Qualidade de Ouro' seal for bathing-water quality.7

Albufeira is the cove coast. It holds 24 Blue Flag beaches in 2026, plus the Marina de Albufeira, more than any other municipality in the Algarve; the next highest is Loulé with 12. Among them are Peneco, Oura, Santa Eulália, S. Rafael and the two Falésia sites, Falésia Alfamar and Falésia Açoteias.5 They are beautiful, most of them are small, and in August most of them are full. Albufeira's own Praia dos Pescadores lost its Blue Flag for 2026.8

So: variety and drama in Albufeira, space and room to put a windbreak down in Armação de Pêra. Our beaches hub and the older post on the top 10 beaches near Armação de Pêra go further into the cliff coves you can reach from either town, because from Armação de Pêra the Lagoa coves are 3 to 5 minutes away by car.

Which town suits families better?

This is our view as hosts, not a measured fact. Armação de Pêra suits families with young children better, because the beach is flat, wide and within a few hundred metres of the flats, because you can walk to it rather than drive to it, and because the town closes down early enough for children to sleep. Albufeira suits older teenagers and groups better, for exactly the reasons that make it harder with a four-year-old.

The one sourced family point worth knowing is the beach library. Silves council installs a Biblioteca de Praia on Praia dos Pescadores in Armação de Pêra between June and August, with books, newspapers, magazines, games and activities on the sand, and lending of up to two books per person for five days.9

What about nightlife?

Again, our view. Albufeira has the Algarve's best-known strip and a nightlife economy built around it. Armação de Pêra has restaurants, bars along the seafront and a promenade that fills up after dinner, and then it goes quiet. If a late night out is the point of the holiday, book Albufeira. If you want to sleep with the window open, book here.

Can you do both?

Yes, easily, and this is what we actually suggest. Armação de Pêra to Albufeira town centre is about 14 km and about 20 minutes by car.4 Vamus Algarve runs line 51 Albufeira to Lagos along the coast, and line 13 and line 14 between Albufeira and Portimão.10 You can stay in the quiet town and go to the loud one for an evening, which is much harder to do the other way round.

The comparison table

The rows on beach type, atmosphere, nightlife, family suitability and 'best for' are our opinion as owner-operators. The airport, tourist tax and Blue Flag rows are sourced and footnoted.

Armação de Pêra Albufeira

Nightlife (our view) Seafront bars and restaurants, quiet after midnight The Algarve's best-known nightlife strip
Family suitability (our view) Strong for under-10s: flat beach, short walk, quiet nights Strong for teenagers and groups; harder with small children in the centre

Municipal tourist tax No. Silves levies none1 Yes. €2.00 per person per night, April to October inclusive, maximum 7 consecutive nights, guests aged 13 and over23

Our verdict

If your holiday is built around the beach and the people in your party include children under about ten, or anyone who values a quiet night, book Armação de Pêra. You get a wider beach, a shorter walk to it, no tourist tax and a town that is still a town. If your holiday is built around going out, or you are travelling with older teenagers who will be bored by nine o'clock, book Albufeira and accept the €2.00 per person per night in season. And if you cannot decide, remember that 14 km is 20 minutes: you can stay in the quiet town and visit the loud one, but you cannot easily stay in the loud one and find quiet.

We are the owners, we answer the phone ourselves, and we would rather you booked the right town than booked with us. If Albufeira is the right answer for your trip, book Albufeira.

Is Armação de Pêra cheaper than Albufeira?

We will not claim that, because we hold no sourced price comparison between the two towns. What we can tell you is the one difference that is documented: Armação de Pêra is in Silves and carries no municipal tourist tax, while Albufeira charges €2.00 per person per night from April to October inclusive, up to 7 consecutive nights, on guests aged 13 and over.123 Last verified: 17 September 2026.

How far is Armação de Pêra from Albufeira?

About 14 km and about 20 minutes by car.4 Vamus Algarve also runs line 51 between Albufeira and Lagos along the coast.10

Which has better beaches, Armação de Pêra or Albufeira?

They are different. Armação de Pêra has one long, wide sandy bay that flew the Blue Flag in 2026 and also holds the 'Praia Acessível' and Quercus 'Qualidade de Ouro' awards.57 Albufeira has 24 Blue Flag beaches in 2026, mostly smaller cliff coves, plus the Marina de Albufeira.5 More beaches in Albufeira, more space per person in Armação de Pêra.

Is Armação de Pêra too quiet for a holiday?

For some people, yes, and we would rather say so. There is no nightlife strip. There are restaurants, seafront bars, a promenade and a long beach, and the town is quiet by midnight. If that sounds like a problem rather than a feature, Albufeira will suit you better.

Is Armação de Pêra closer to Faro airport than Albufeira?

No. Albufeira is closer, at about 46 km and about 37 minutes, against about 53 km and about 45 minutes to Armação de Pêra.4
