Is Armação de Pêra good for families?
Yes, particularly for children under about ten. The beach is flat, wide and Blue Flag, between a few seconds and a little over 200 metres away (a walk of under four minutes). The municipality of Silves charges no tourist tax, and the town is quiet by midnight. The cove beaches and boat trips are minutes away.
Yes. Armação de Pêra suits families well, and best of all families with children under about ten: the town beach is long, flat and wide, it flew the Blue Flag in 2026 and also holds the 'Praia Acessível' award for access by people with reduced mobility, our apartments are between a few seconds and a little over 200 metres from the sand, a walk of under four minutes, and the municipality of Silves charges no municipal tourist tax.1234
That is the answer. The rest is detail, including the parts that do not suit everyone.
Why the beach is the main reason
Most Algarve resorts sell you a cove. Coves are beautiful and they involve steps, a hill and a car park.
Armação de Pêra sells you a bay. Praia de Armação de Pêra runs flat and wide along the whole front of the town, with ramps rather than stairs from the promenade. You can push a pram along the promenade, get onto the sand without lifting anything, and still find space in August by walking five minutes east.
The awards back that up rather than just decorating it. In 2026 the beach flew the Blue Flag, one of only two awarded sites in the entire municipality of Silves. The Instituto Nacional para a Reabilitação gave it the 'Praia Acessível' award, which recognises conditions of access and use for all citizens including people with reduced mobility. The environmental association Quercus gave it the 'Qualidade de Ouro' seal for bathing-water quality.12
The bathing season runs from 1 June to 30 September 2026, and the Blue Flag season runs for exactly the same dates.3 Outside those dates the beach is open and lovely and the season has ended, which is a different thing from being closed.

How far is the beach from each apartment?
This is the question that actually decides a family holiday, because it is the difference between four beach trips a day and one.
| Apartment | Sleeps | Bedrooms | To the sand | Walk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Penthouse 1, Edifício Marany | 6 | 2 | seconds from the sand | A few seconds |
| Algarve Oceanfront Luxury Penthouse 2, Edifício Marany | 8 | 3 | seconds from the sand | A few seconds |
| Beachfront Apartment 4F, Avenida do Rio | 4 | 1 | 140 m | About 2 minutes |
| Beach Apartment 7G, Av. Gen. Humberto Delgado | 4 | 1 | a little over 200 m | About 4 minutes |
45 A walk of a few seconds means you can go back for the forgotten sun cream without losing the morning.
What the four apartments give a family
All four have free Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen, bed linen and towels, air conditioning, self check-in by key lockbox, and parking. Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is by 11:00.4
- Algarve Oceanfront Luxury Penthouse 2 is the one for a big group or two families: three bedrooms, two bathrooms, sleeps 8, one queen bed and two doubles plus a sofa bed. It has a washing machine, a dishwasher, heating as well as air conditioning, a balcony, an outdoor grill, an iron and board, a hair dryer and smoke, carbon-monoxide and fire safety equipment listed on the page. Underground garage bay 703 is included and there is free street parking outside.4
- Penthouse 1 sleeps 6 in two bedrooms with a sofa bed in the lounge, and has a private secure underground garage space included.4
- Beachfront Apartment 4F sleeps 4 in one bedroom with a sofa bed, has a laundry area and free parking on the premises.4
- Beach Apartment 7G sleeps 4 in one bedroom with a sofa bed, is on the seventh floor with modern lifts, and has private gated parking on the premises, free.4
Two honest notes. Both Edifício Marany penthouses are top-level flats reached by a lift to the sixth floor and then one flight of stairs to the door, which is worth knowing if you are travelling with a pram or a relative who cannot manage steps; Beach Apartment 7G has lifts all the way.4 And we are not listing cots or high chairs on this page, because our verified facts do not record them for any of the four apartments. Ask us before you book and we will tell you exactly what we have rather than what the website wishes we had.
Is there a tourist tax for families?
No, not here. Armação de Pêra is in the municipality of Silves, which levies no municipal tourist tax, so nothing is added per person or per night.6
It is worth knowing what the neighbours charge, because a family of four feels it. Albufeira charges €2.00 per person per night from April to October inclusive, up to 7 consecutive nights, on guests aged 13 and over.78 Lagoa charges in every month, €2.00 per night in high season, 1 April to 31 October, and €1.00 in low season, 1 November to 31 March, also up to 7 consecutive nights and on guests aged 13 and over.9 Portimão, which includes Alvor, charges €2.00 per person per night from 1 April to 31 October and €1.00 from 1 November to 31 March, all year round, on the same 7-night and 13-and-over terms.10
Two adults and two teenagers on a week in Albufeira in July would pay €56.00 in tax. Here, nothing. Full detail is on our tourist tax page.

What is there for children besides the beach?
The beach library is the one we always mention, because it is free and almost nobody knows about it. Silves municipal library installs a Biblioteca de Praia on Praia dos Pescadores, towards the eastern end of the bay, with books, newspapers, magazines, games and activities on the sand. It also lends books to take away, up to two per person for five days. It runs seasonally between June and August.11
There is a playground close to Edifício Marany, about 140 metres on foot from Penthouse 1, about 165 metres from Algarve Oceanfront Luxury Penthouse 2 and about 300 metres from Beach Apartment 7G.12 The municipal market is about 300 metres from the Marany flats, which makes the morning bread run a five-minute job.12
Beyond that, the day trips are the real answer, and we have written most of them up:
- The boardwalk over the lagoon east of town is flat, shaded in parts and full of birds: Armação de Pêra boardwalk and lagoon guide.
- Twelve family days out within reach, with ages and heat in mind: Armação de Pêra with kids.
- The sea cave everyone comes for, and how to see it without the crowds: Benagil Cave without crowds.
- A half day in a castle town 20 minutes inland: Half-day in Silves.
We have not listed water parks or attractions with prices and opening hours, because those change every season and a wrong page is worse than one that sends you to the operator.
Which beach suits which age?
Our view as hosts, not a measured fact.
- Under five: Praia de Armação de Pêra, every time. Flat, close, ramps, room.
- Five to twelve: add Praia do Vale do Olival, about eleven minutes on foot from the Marany penthouses and Blue Flag in 2026.13
- Teenagers: Praia da Senhora da Rocha, for the tunnel through the rock and the headland, about 6 minutes by car.14
- Anyone who dislikes steps: avoid Praia da Cova Redonda. Turismo do Algarve describes its access as a long staircase in Portuguese cobble, and that is exactly what it is.15
All five are on our beaches hub.
What does not suit families here?
We would rather tell you now than have you find out on day two.
There is no nightlife strip, so teenagers who want one will be bored. The town is small: two or three streets of shops rather than a shopping centre. The Atlantic is cold in May and October and the waves at the eastern end of the bay can be lively on a windy day. And Faro airport is about 53 km away, roughly 45 minutes by car, which is further than Albufeira.16
If those are dealbreakers, read Armação de Pêra or Albufeira?. We would rather you booked the right town.
Getting here and getting around with children
Faro airport to Armação de Pêra is about 53 km and about 45 minutes by car.16 The options are set out in Faro Airport (FAO) to Armação de Pêra.
You do not need a car to have a good week here, because the beach, the market, the playground and the restaurants are all inside a fifteen-minute walk. You do need one, or a taxi, for the cove beaches west of Vale do Olival. Vamus Algarve runs coastal line 51 between Albufeira and Lagos, line 31 to Silves and line 29 to Fonte Louzeiro, and the nearest railway station is Alcantarilha on the CP Algarve line, about 9.5 km and about 14 minutes away by car.171816 More in getting around Armação de Pêra without a car.
Algarve Oceanfront Luxury Penthouse 2, Edifício Marany, Rua das Caravelas 7, Armação de Pêra. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, sleeps 8, and seconds from the sand at Praia de Armação de Pêra, a walk of a few seconds. Licensed AL 180211/AL. It is the largest of our four and the one we put two families in: one queen bed, two doubles and a sofa bed, a washing machine, a dishwasher, air conditioning and heating, a balcony and an outdoor grill, with underground garage bay 703 included. Reached by lift to the sixth floor and one flight of stairs to the door.4

- Is Armação de Pêra good for families with young children?
Yes. The town beach is flat and wide, reached by ramps rather than steps, it flew the Blue Flag in 2026 and holds the 'Praia Acessível' award, and our apartments are between a few seconds and a little over 200 metres from the sand, a walk of under four minutes.124 Last verified: 17 September 2026.
- Is there a tourist tax for children in Armação de Pêra?
There is no municipal tourist tax at all here, for adults or children, because Armação de Pêra is in the municipality of Silves.6 In neighbouring Albufeira, Lagoa and Portimão the tax applies to guests aged 13 and over, in each case up to 7 consecutive nights.7910
- Do the apartments have a cot or a high chair?
Our verified facts do not record a cot or a high chair for any of the four apartments, so we do not claim them here. Call or message us on +351 961 405 002 before you book and we will tell you exactly what is in each flat. We typically reply within 1 hour.
- Which Caravelis apartment is best for a family of six or more?
Algarve Oceanfront Luxury Penthouse 2, which sleeps 8 in three bedrooms with two bathrooms, seconds from the sand.4
- Is the beach safe for children to swim?
The bathing season at Praia de Armação de Pêra runs from 1 June to 30 September 2026, and the beach holds the Blue Flag and the Quercus 'Qualidade de Ouro' seal for bathing-water quality.23 It is the open Atlantic, so the eastern end of the bay gets livelier water on a windy day. Watch the flags and keep small children in the shallows.
- Is there anything for children to do on a rainy day?
In summer, the beach library on Praia dos Pescadores runs between June and August with books, games and activities.11 Otherwise the honest answer is that this is a beach town, and a wet day is a day for Silves castle 20 minutes inland: Half-day in Silves.
