Armação de Pêra or Alvor: which should you book?

Alvor is an old fishing village in Portimão with a long sandy beach and an estuary reserve behind it. Armação de Pêra is a beach town in Silves, 33 km east. Portimão charges a tourist tax all year round. Silves charges none. Both have Blue Flag beaches.

Alvor is an old fishing village in the municipality of Portimão with a long sandy beach and the Ria de Alvor estuary behind it, while Armação de Pêra is a beach town about 33 km east in the municipality of Silves; Portimão charges a municipal tourist tax all year round and Silves charges none.12 Of the three comparisons we get asked to make, this is the one where the two towns are most alike and the tax difference bites hardest, because Portimão charges in winter too.

We own and let four apartments in Armação de Pêra. The sourced facts below are footnoted. Where we are giving an opinion, we say so.

How far is each town from Faro airport?

Faro airport to Armação de Pêra is about 53 km and about 45 minutes by car. Faro airport to Alvor is about 75 km and about an hour.3 Alvor is the furthest west of the towns people compare us with, and that extra 22 km is a real consideration on a late-evening arrival with children in the car.

Our post on Faro Airport (FAO) to Armação de Pêra covers the options.

Does Alvor charge a tourist tax?

Yes, and like Lagoa but unlike Albufeira it charges one every month of the year. Alvor is a freguesia of Portimão.4 The Taxa Turística de Portimão came into force on 14 March 2024 and is collected by tourist accommodation and alojamento local from their guests. It is charged per person per night, up to a maximum of 7 consecutive nights per person per stay, on guests aged 13 and over. The rates are €1.00 per person per night in low season, 1 November to 31 March, and €2.00 per person per night in high season, 1 April to 31 October.2

Armação de Pêra is in Silves, which levies no municipal tourist tax.1

That all-year rule matters most to the people who stay longest. On a two-week November stay for two people, Portimão adds €1.00 per person per night up to the 7-night cap, so €14.00; in Silves, nothing is added in any month. Our tourist tax page sets out all three neighbouring municipalities.

Which has the better beaches?

Both are well rated, and both are sandy rather than cove beaches, which makes this the closest of our three comparisons.

Portimão holds six Blue Flag beaches in 2026, Alvor Nascente, Alvor Poente, Rocha, Três Castelos, Vau and the marina beach, and its nine awarded sites also include the marina itself and two ecotourism boats.5 Alvor's beach is long, wide and backed by dunes, with a boardwalk over them.

Armação de Pêra holds the Blue Flag at Praia de Armação de Pêra, one of only two awarded sites in the municipality of Silves in 2026, and the same beach carries the Instituto Nacional para a Reabilitação 'Praia Acessível' award and the Quercus 'Qualidade de Ouro' seal for bathing-water quality.56 The bathing season there runs from 1 June to 30 September 2026.7

The difference is what sits next door. Behind Alvor is the Ria de Alvor, a tidal estuary with boardwalks and birdlife that is genuinely special and has no equivalent in Armação de Pêra. East of Armação de Pêra is the Salgados lagoon and its boardwalk, which is smaller but also good. Both towns are within reach of the other: we send our own guests west to Alvor regularly, and have written it up in Ria de Alvor, the first nature escape we recommend. Our own walk is in the Armação de Pêra boardwalk and lagoon guide.

Which is nearer the cliff coves?

Armação de Pêra, clearly. The Lagoa cove coast begins at the western end of our bay. Praia do Vale do Olival is about 800 metres on foot from Penthouse 1, and Praia da Senhora da Rocha is about 3 km and about 6 minutes by car.8 Praia da Marinha and Benagil are a short drive further. From Alvor you are looking at a 30-minute-plus drive east to reach the same coast.

Our beaches hub has a page for each of the five beaches we send guests to, and the Benagil trip is covered in Benagil Cave without crowds.

Which town has more going on?

Our view. Alvor has a pretty old quarter, a working fishing harbour, a riverside strip of restaurants and a summer crowd that skews young British. Armação de Pêra has a longer seafront, a Portuguese family holiday feel, and a quieter evening. Neither has a nightlife scene of the Albufeira kind. If the old-village atmosphere is what you are after, Alvor has more of it.

Getting between the two

Armação de Pêra to Alvor is about 33 km and about 32 minutes by car.3 By public transport it is not quick: Vamus Algarve runs line 13 and line 14 between Albufeira and Portimão and line 80 between Lagos and Portimão, and the CP Algarve line runs Regional trains between Lagos, Portimão, Alcantarilha and Faro, with Alcantarilha the station for Armação de Pêra.910 Alcantarilha station is about 9.5 km and about 14 minutes by car from Rua das Caravelas 7.3

The comparison table

The rows on beach type, atmosphere, nightlife, family suitability and 'best for' are our opinion as owner-operators. The airport, tourist tax and Blue Flag rows are sourced and footnoted.

Distance from Faro airport About 53 km, about 45 minutes by car3 About 75 km, about an hour by car3
Municipal tourist tax No. Silves levies none1 Yes, all year. Portimão charges €2.00 per person per night 1 April to 31 October and €1.00 per person per night 1 November to 31 March, maximum 7 consecutive nights, guests aged 13 and over2

Best for (our view) Cliff coves within minutes, a shorter transfer, no tourist tax in any month Estuary and dune walks, an old-village feel, the west Algarve on your doorstep

Our verdict

This is the closest of our three comparisons and we will not pretend otherwise. Alvor is a lovely place with a good beach and a nature reserve most resorts would envy.

Book Alvor if the estuary, the dunes and the old village are the point, and if you are happy to drive an extra 22 km from the airport and pay Portimão's tax in whichever month you travel.

Book Armação de Pêra if you want the cliff coves within a few minutes, a shorter transfer, and no municipal tourist tax at all. The tax difference is small on a summer week and grows on a long winter stay, which is exactly when it is least expected.

And if you are staying with us, go to Alvor for a day anyway. It is worth the 32-minute drive, and the estuary is best in the morning.
