Praia da Senhora da Rocha: the beach guide

Praia da Senhora da Rocha is the cove under the chapel headland in the municipality of Lagoa, about 3 km west of Armação de Pêra and about 6 minutes by car. It flew the Blue Flag in 2026, with a bathing season from 1 June to 30 September.

Praia da Senhora da Rocha is the sand cove beneath the chapel headland in the freguesia of Porches, municipality of Lagoa, it flew the Blue Flag in 2026, and it lies about 3 km and about 6 minutes by car west of our apartments in Armação de Pêra.123 Turismo do Algarve calls the headland one of the Algarve's finest tourist postcards, and it is hard to argue.4

How do you get there from each apartment?

Most guests drive. The walk is doable and pretty, but it is 3 to 4 km each way along the coast road and it is real work in August.

Apartment On foot By car
Penthouse 1, Edifício Marany About 3.1 km, about 41 minutes About 3.0 km, about 6 minutes
Algarve Oceanfront Luxury Penthouse 2, Edifício Marany About 3.1 km, about 42 minutes About 3.0 km, about 6 minutes
Beachfront Apartment 4F, Avenida do Rio About 3.7 km, about 50 minutes About 3.8 km, about 7 minutes
Beach Apartment 7G, Av. General Humberto Delgado About 3.0 km, about 40 minutes About 2.8 km, about 5 minutes

Distances and times are road-route figures measured on OpenStreetMap data on 17 September 2026, to the nearest point of the beach polygon.5 The walking times are model estimates at a steady pace on the road route, not on the cliff path. All four apartments include parking, so the car is there if you want it.6

What is it like?

A small, sheltered cove of soft sand with the headland closing it off to the west. On top of that headland stands the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha, which is the reason for the name and for most of the photographs.

Turismo do Algarve's own description is worth reading in full if you have the Portuguese. It records that the promontory is thought to have been a place of worship for several peoples, including the Visigoths and later the Muslims; that a walled fortress once stood here and was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, leaving only the chapel that stood inside it; that the chapel has a rectangular narthex opening through a triple arcade on columns with Visigothic capitals dated by some specialists to the third and fourth centuries and by others to the Mozarabic period of the ninth to eleventh centuries; and that it was classified in 1963 as a property of public interest.4

Walk out onto the headland and you get the panorama along the coast towards Albufeira. Walk through the tunnel in the rock at one end of the sand and you come out on the next cove. That tunnel is the bit children remember.

Our long-form guide goes deeper into the history and the day: An Algarvian's guide to Praia da Senhora da Rocha.

Does it have the Blue Flag?

Yes, in 2026. Praia da Senhora da Rocha is one of six Blue Flag sites in the municipality of Lagoa this year, alongside Caneiros, Carvoeiro, Ferragudo, Vale Centeanes and Vale do Olival.1 Its beach code in the Blue Flag register is PTCE2H.2

When is the bathing season?

The bathing season runs from 1 June 2026 to 30 September 2026. The Blue Flag season is shorter, from 1 July 2026 to 30 September 2026.2 That one-month gap between the two seasons is normal for the Lagoa beaches and is worth knowing if you are here in June.

Where do you park?

There are car parks immediately behind the beach, above the cove. OpenStreetMap records three of them within about 150 metres of the sand, one of which is tagged as free to use and surfaced with compacted gravel.7 We are not going to claim the others are free, because they are not tagged either way.

The practical point is capacity, not price. These are small car parks serving a small cove. In July and August they fill early, and the road down is narrow. Go before ten or after four.

Tide and sand

The cove is small, so the usable sand changes noticeably with the tide, but we have no published source for the figures and we are not going to invent one. Check a tide table for Portimão on the day if you are planning a long afternoon.

What else is nearby?

This is the start of the Lagoa cove coast. Praia da Cova Redonda is the next cove east, about 270 metres away at the nearest edge, and Praia do Vale do Olival is between here and Armação de Pêra. Going west, Praia da Marinha, Benagil and Algar Seco are all within 20 minutes by car: see Benagil Cave without crowds and Algar Seco, a first-week guide. The full local picture is on our beaches hub.

One practical note on the municipal boundary. Senhora da Rocha is in Lagoa, which charges a municipal tourist tax on overnight stays. Armação de Pêra is in Silves, which does not.8 Visiting the beach costs you nothing extra; sleeping on that side of the line does.

The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha, classified in 1963 as a property of public interest. Turismo do Algarve records that a walled fortress stood here until the 1755 earthquake, leaving only the chapel, and that specialists disagree over whether its columns' capitals are Visigothic of the third and fourth centuries or Mozarabic of the ninth to eleventh.4

Is Senhora da Rocha in the same municipality as Armação de Pêra?

No. It is in Porches, in the municipality of Lagoa. Armação de Pêra is in Silves. That boundary matters for the tourist tax, which Lagoa charges and Silves does not.38
