Armação de Pêra or Carvoeiro: which should you book?
Armação de Pêra and Carvoeiro are 15 km apart and about 19 minutes by car. Armação de Pêra is a flat town on a long sandy bay in Silves, with no tourist tax. Carvoeiro is a small cliff cove in Lagoa, which charges one in every month, €2.00 per night in high season and €1.00 in low.
Armação de Pêra is a flat beach town on a long sandy bay in the municipality of Silves, and Carvoeiro is a small cliff cove about 15 km west in the municipality of Lagoa, which charges a municipal tourist tax where Silves charges none.123 They are 19 minutes apart by car,4 which means the real question is not which town to visit but which one you want to walk out of your front door into every morning.
We let four apartments in Armação de Pêra, so treat our opinion as an owner's opinion. The sourced facts are footnoted; the judgements are labelled.
What is the difference in a sentence?
Carvoeiro is prettier. Armação de Pêra is easier.
Carvoeiro's beach sits in a bowl of ochre cliffs at the bottom of a steep street, and in our view it is the most photogenic cove on this stretch of coast. That bowl is also the catch. The beach is small, the walk back up is a hill, and in August the parking is the holiday's main source of argument.
Armação de Pêra is flat. The bay runs for a long way, the promenade runs alongside it, and you get to the sand without descending anything.
How far is each town from Faro airport?
Faro airport to Armação de Pêra is about 53 km and about 45 minutes by car. Faro airport to Carvoeiro is about 65 km and about 50 minutes.4 Armação de Pêra is the closer of the two by roughly 12 km.
Our post on Faro Airport (FAO) to Armação de Pêra sets out the transfer options.
Does Carvoeiro charge a tourist tax?
Yes. Carvoeiro is part of the União das Freguesias de Lagoa e Carvoeiro, in the municipality of Lagoa.5 The Taxa Municipal Turística de Lagoa came into force on 13 April 2024 under Regulamento n.º 425/2024, published in Diário da República n.º 72 of 12 April 2024, and is collected by tourist accommodation and alojamento local from their guests.2 The published rates are €2.00 per night in high season, 1 April to 31 October, and €1.00 in low season, 1 November to 31 March. The two seasons cover all twelve months, so Lagoa charges in every month of the year. The tax is capped at 7 consecutive nights per stay and applies to guests aged 13 and over.3
Armação de Pêra is in Silves, which levies no municipal tourist tax at all.1 Our tourist tax page sets out all three neighbouring municipalities side by side.

Which has the better beaches?
Both do well, in different ways.
Carvoeiro's own beach flew the Blue Flag in 2026, and so did five other sites in the municipality of Lagoa: Caneiros, Ferragudo, Senhora da Rocha, Vale Centeanes and Vale do Olival.6
Praia de Armação de Pêra flew the Blue Flag in 2026 as one of only two awarded sites in the municipality of Silves, and it also holds the Instituto Nacional para a Reabilitação 'Praia Acessível' award for access by people with reduced mobility and the Quercus 'Qualidade de Ouro' seal for bathing-water quality.67
Here is the part people miss. Two of Lagoa's six Blue Flag beaches are closer to our apartments than they are to most of Carvoeiro. Praia do Vale do Olival is about 800 metres on foot from Penthouse 1 and about 3 minutes by car, and Praia da Senhora da Rocha is about 3 km and about 6 minutes by car.89 Staying in Armação de Pêra does not cut you off from the cove coast. It puts you at the eastern end of it.
Our beaches hub has a page for each of the five beaches we send guests to.
Which suits families better?
Our view, not a measured fact: Armação de Pêra, if the children are small. A flat walk to a wide beach beats a steep walk to a small one when you are carrying a cool box, a parasol and a toddler. Silves council also installs a Biblioteca de Praia on Praia dos Pescadores between June and August, with books, games and activities on the sand and lending of up to two books for five days.10
Carvoeiro suits couples, walkers and photographers. The clifftop boardwalk to Algar Seco is one of the best short walks in the Algarve, and we send our own guests to it: see Algar Seco, a first-week guide.
What about nightlife and eating out?
Our view again. Neither town is a nightlife destination and neither pretends to be. Carvoeiro has a tight cluster of restaurants around the square above the beach, which is charming and gets booked out. Armação de Pêra has a longer seafront with more places spread along it, which means less atmosphere per metre and more chance of a table. Our list of ten walkable restaurants in Armação de Pêra is the one guests use most.
Getting between the two
Armação de Pêra to Carvoeiro is about 15 km and about 19 minutes by car.4 By bus, Vamus Algarve runs line 110 Lagoa to Portimão (via Sesmarias and Praia dos Caneiros) and line 113 Portimão to S. Bartolomeu de Messines via Lagoa and Silves; from Armação de Pêra, line 31 runs to Silves and line 51 runs along the coast between Albufeira and Lagos.11 Bus connections between the two towns are not direct, so if Carvoeiro is a day trip rather than a base, plan to drive.
The comparison table
The rows on beach type, atmosphere, nightlife, family suitability and 'best for' are our opinion as owner-operators. The airport, tourist tax and Blue Flag rows are sourced and footnoted.
| Armação de Pêra | Carvoeiro | |
|---|---|---|
| Beach type | One long, wide, flat sandy bay; Blue Flag 20266 | Small sand cove enclosed by cliffs, reached down a hill; Blue Flag 20266 |
| Atmosphere (our view) | Working beach town, Portuguese family feel, room to spread out | Picture-postcard cove village, pretty, compact, busy in the centre |
| Nightlife (our view) | Seafront bars and restaurants, quiet after midnight | A handful of bars around the square, quiet after midnight |
| Family suitability (our view) | Strong for under-10s: flat, wide, short walk, beach library in summer10 | Better for couples and walkers than for pushchairs; the hill is the issue |
| Distance from Faro airport | About 53 km, about 45 minutes by car4 | About 65 km, about 50 minutes by car4 |
| Municipal tourist tax | No. Silves levies none1 | Yes, in every month. Lagoa charges €2.00 per night in high season (1 April to 31 October) and €1.00 in low season (1 November to 31 March), maximum 7 consecutive nights, guests aged 13 and over23 |
| Price level | We hold no sourced price comparison between the two towns and will not invent one. The only cost difference we can evidence is the tourist tax row above. | As left |
| Best for (our view) | Beach days, small children, long stays, easy walking | Photographs, clifftop walks, couples, a smaller and prettier base |

Our verdict
Carvoeiro is the better-looking town and Armação de Pêra is the better-working one. If you are two adults with a hire car, who want a cove under cliffs and a clifftop walk before breakfast, book Carvoeiro and budget the tax. If you are a family, or a group, or anyone who would rather walk to the beach than drive down to it, book Armação de Pêra. You will be 19 minutes from Carvoeiro, 3 minutes from Vale do Olival and 6 minutes from Senhora da Rocha, and you will pay no municipal tourist tax on any of those days.
We would rather be honest than persuasive. If the picture in your head is the Carvoeiro cove, no beach in Armação de Pêra is going to replace it, and you should book Carvoeiro.

- Is Carvoeiro in the same municipality as Armação de Pêra?
No. Carvoeiro is in the municipality of Lagoa, as part of the União das Freguesias de Lagoa e Carvoeiro. Armação de Pêra is in the municipality of Silves.5 That boundary is why one charges a tourist tax and the other does not.
- How far is Carvoeiro from Armação de Pêra?
About 15 km and about 19 minutes by car.4 There is no direct bus between the two, so plan to drive if you want to go for an evening.
- Does Carvoeiro have a tourist tax and Armação de Pêra not?
Yes, and in every month. Lagoa charges €2.00 per night in high season, 1 April to 31 October, and €1.00 in low season, 1 November to 31 March, under Regulamento n.º 425/2024, in force since 13 April 2024, up to 7 consecutive nights and on guests aged 13 and over. Silves charges nothing.123 Last verified: 17 September 2026.
- Can I reach the Lagoa cove beaches if I stay in Armação de Pêra?
Yes, and quickly. Praia do Vale do Olival is about 800 metres on foot from Penthouse 1 and Praia da Senhora da Rocha is about 3 km by car, about 6 minutes. Both flew the Blue Flag in 2026.689
- Which is better for young children?
Our view is Armação de Pêra, because the beach is flat and wide and the walk to it is level. Carvoeiro's cove is reached down a hill and back up again, which is hard work with a pushchair.
- Which is better for walking?
Carvoeiro, for clifftop walking. The boardwalk towards Algar Seco is the best short cliff walk in the area, and we recommend it to our own guests: Algar Seco, a first-week guide.
