Armação de Pêra in winter and for long stays

Winter here is mild rather than warm. The nearest published climate normal, Faro, gives a January mean maximum of 16.3 °C, a mean minimum of 8.3 °C and no frost days in any month. The beach empties, the bathing season ends, and the town keeps working.

Armação de Pêra in winter is mild rather than warm: at Faro, the nearest station with a published climate normal, the 1991 to 2020 average for January is a daily maximum of 16.3 °C and a daily minimum of 8.3 °C, with 49.3 mm of rain across an average of six rainy days, and no frost days in any month of the year.1 That is the honest headline: not a summer holiday in December, and not a British winter either.

We let four apartments here and we live with the seasons, so this page is written for two groups: people wondering whether a winter week is worth it, and people thinking about a month or longer.

What are the winter figures?

These are the 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Faro, station 554, published by the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera. Faro is the nearest station to Armação de Pêra with a published normal, about 36 km east in a straight line and about 53 km by road, so treat these as the regional picture rather than a measurement of our street.12

Month Mean daily max Mean daily min Mean daily Rainfall Days with 1 mm or more
November 19.6 °C 11.9 °C 15.7 °C 75.5 mm 6.6
December 17.1 °C 9.7 °C 13.4 °C 90.0 mm 7.0
January 16.3 °C 8.3 °C 12.3 °C 49.3 mm 6.0
February 17.0 °C 8.8 °C 12.9 °C 41.9 mm 5.4
March 18.9 °C 10.8 °C 14.9 °C 46.8 mm 5.6
Year 22.3 °C 14.0 °C 18.2 °C 455.1 mm 48.9

Two numbers in that table do more work than the rest. The average number of days with 1 mm of rain or more in January is six, which means roughly 25 dry days in the month. And the average number of days per year with a minimum below 0 °C is zero, in every single month.1

Our older piece on the season is still the best read on how it feels rather than how it measures: Winter in the Algarve, why it is worth visiting.

Can you use the beach in winter?

You can walk on it every day of the year, and most winter mornings you will have long stretches of it to yourself.

Swimming is a different question. The bathing season at Praia de Armação de Pêra runs from 1 June to 30 September 2026, and the Blue Flag season runs for the same dates.3 Outside those dates the beach is open and the season has ended. At Praia da Senhora da Rocha and Praia do Vale do Olival the bathing season is also 1 June to 30 September 2026.45

People do swim here in November and again in March. We would not put a child in the water without thinking about it, and we would not swim alone out of season. Our beaches hub has the detail beach by beach.

What stays open?

In words, because we will not publish a list of opening hours that would be wrong by the time you read it.

The town keeps working through the winter. Armação de Pêra is a real place with a resident population, a municipal market, a fishing association, schools and a health centre, not a resort that shutters in October. The promenade stays open, the beaches stay open, the supermarkets stay open, and a good number of restaurants and cafés stay open.

Some seafront businesses do close for part of the winter, and which ones varies year to year. Anyone who tells you exactly which restaurants will be trading next February is guessing. For guests staying more than a fortnight we send a short note a week before arrival with what is actually open. That is the only version worth having.

Public transport runs year round. Vamus Algarve's published lines include 51 Albufeira to Lagos along the coast, 31 Armação de Pêra to Silves, 29 Armação de Pêra to Fonte Louzeiro, and 13, 14 and 17 linking Albufeira with Portimão and Silves.6 The CP Algarve line runs Regional services between Lagos, Portimão, Alcantarilha and Faro, with electric trains and direct journeys between Vila Real de Santo António and Lagos; Alcantarilha is the station for Armação de Pêra, about 9.5 km and about 14 minutes by car from Rua das Caravelas 7.78 Check the current timetables before you rely on either.

More on car-free days is in getting around Armação de Pêra without a car.

Is it good for remote work?

It can be, and it depends on what you need.

All four apartments have free Wi-Fi.9 Two of the four, Penthouse 1 and Beachfront Apartment 4F, have a dedicated workspace in the lounge.9 We are not claiming a workspace in the other two, because our verified facts do not confirm one for Beach Apartment 7G or for Algarve Oceanfront Luxury Penthouse 2. If a desk is essential to your trip, ask us before you book and we will tell you what is actually in the flat.

On heating, the same rule. All four apartments have air conditioning. Algarve Oceanfront Luxury Penthouse 2 has heating listed among its amenities, and Beach Apartment 7G has units in the living room and the bedroom that both heat and cool, installed by 10 September 2026.9 For the other two we are not making a heating claim beyond the air conditioning, and it is a fair question to ask us in December.

We have not published a broadband speed test, because we have no current measurement we would stand behind for all four flats. Ask, and we will run one.

The practical case is in the figures: an average January maximum of 16.3 °C means you can walk at lunchtime in a jumper, and roughly 25 dry days a month means you will.1

How do long stays work?

Rates. 10% off stays of 28 nights or more; ask us for a quote.

Ask us for a quote for your dates and we will give you a firm number for the direct rate.

Minimum stay. Minimum stay: 5 nights, or 14 nights in July and August. The booking calendar shows the exact rule for your dates.

Cancellation. For direct bookings we offer free cancellation up to 14 days before check-in for a full refund, a 50% refund for cancellations between 7 and 14 days before check-in, and no refund for cancellations less than 7 days before check-in.9 That ladder is more generous than the policy the booking platforms apply to the same flats, which is one of the reasons to book direct: why book direct.

What you do not pay. There is no municipal tourist tax in Armação de Pêra, because it is in the municipality of Silves, which levies none.10 This matters far more on a long winter stay than on a summer week, because the neighbouring municipality of Portimão charges its tax every month of the year, at €1.00 per person per night from 1 November to 31 March and €2.00 from 1 April to 31 October, up to 7 consecutive nights, on guests aged 13 and over.11 Albufeira charges from April to October inclusive, and Lagoa charges in both seasons, so in every month, at €2.00 from 1 April to 31 October and €1.00 from 1 November to 31 March, also capped at 7 consecutive nights and applying to guests aged 13 and over.1213 Full detail is on our tourist tax page.

Booking direct. Booking direct removes the platform commission of roughly 10 to 24% that Airbnb, Booking.com and Vrbo build into their prices, so the direct rate on this site is our lowest available rate for the same dates. Payment is by Stripe checkout on the site, with cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.9

What do you actually do here in February?

Walk, mostly, and eat well.

The boardwalk over the lagoon east of town is at its best in winter, when the birds are in and the heat is not: Armação de Pêra boardwalk and lagoon guide. The cliff paths west towards Senhora da Rocha and Carvoeiro are a pleasure in 17 °C and punishing in 30 °C: Algar Seco, a first-week guide. Silves is 20 minutes inland with a castle and a cathedral: Half-day in Silves and A walking visit to Sé Catedral de Silves.

And the food gets better, not worse, because the restaurants that stay open are the ones the locals use. Ten walkable restaurants in Armação de Pêra and how to order cataplana de mariscos like an Algarvian are the two guests use most.

Who should not come in winter?

If you want to swim in the sea every day, come between June and September. If you want a busy town with everything open, come between May and October. If you want guaranteed sunshine, no month anywhere guarantees that, and December at Faro averages 90.0 mm of rain, the wettest month of the year.1

If you want quiet, space, mild days, cheap flights and a beach to yourself, winter here is one of the better deals in Europe.

Penthouse 1, Edifício Marany, Rua das Caravelas 7, Armação de Pêra. Two bedrooms, one bathroom, sleeps 6, and seconds from the sand at Praia de Armação de Pêra, a walk of a few seconds. Licensed AL 134631/AL. It is the one we suggest for a long winter stay because it has a dedicated workspace in the lounge, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private secure underground garage space included, which is worth having when the weather turns.9

For a couple working remotely, Beachfront Apartment 4F on Avenida do Rio also has a dedicated workspace and a laundry area, 140 metres from the sand.9
