Praia de Armação de Pêra: the beach guide

Praia de Armação de Pêra is the wide, flat, south-facing sand beach that runs the length of the town in the municipality of Silves, it flew the Blue Flag in 2026, and it sits between a few seconds and a little over 200 metres from our four apartments, a walk of under four minutes.¹² It is the beach all four flats look out over, and for most of our guests it is the only beach they need.

How do you get there from each apartment?

All four walks are level. There are no steps down to the sand from the ramps on the promenade.

If you are arriving with a car, everything you need on transfers is in Faro Airport (FAO) to Armação de Pêra.

What is the beach actually like?

Long, wide and flat. Câmara Municipal de Silves records the sand as running about 3 km, bounded by the Alcantarilha and Espiche streams, and calls it one of the largest sandy beaches in the Algarve.⁸ The bay runs east from the old fort, and the sand is deep enough that even in August you can walk five minutes east and find room. The promenade runs behind it with cafés, bars and ice cream, and ramps rather than steps at the town end.

The water is Atlantic: cooler than the Mediterranean, and it wakes you up. The bay faces south and is open, so on a windy day it gets real waves.

Towards the eastern end, by the old fort, is Praia dos Pescadores, where the fishing boats are. Walk the other way and the cliffs begin at Praia do Vale do Olival.

Does it have the Blue Flag?

Yes, in 2026. Praia de Armação de Pêra is one of only two Blue Flag sites in the whole municipality of Silves this year, the other being Praia Grande Poente in the freguesia of Pêra.¹ The beach code in the Blue Flag register is PTCN7V.²

The same beach also holds two other awards this year. The Instituto Nacional para a Reabilitação gave it the 'Praia Acessível' award for access and use by all citizens, including people with reduced mobility, and the environmental association Quercus gave it the 'Qualidade de Ouro' seal for the quality of its bathing water.⁴

When is the bathing season?

The bathing season at Praia de Armação de Pêra runs from 1 June 2026 to 30 September 2026, and the Blue Flag season runs for exactly the same dates.²

Outside those dates the beach stays open and the promenade stays busy. It is simply not the supervised season, and we say so to guests who swim in October and April, which plenty of them do.

What facilities are there?

Beach concessions, cafés and restaurants line the promenade through the season, and the 'Praia Acessível' award is the formal recognition that access arrangements are in place for people with reduced mobility.⁴ We have not published a list of individual concessions, lifeguard posts or equipment hire because we cannot source one that we trust to stay accurate, and a page that guesses is worse than one that says nothing.

Silves council installs a Biblioteca de Praia on Praia dos Pescadores, towards the eastern end of the same bay, between June and August. It lends up to two books per person for five days and runs games and activities on the sand.⁵

Where do you park?

You should not need to. All four of our apartments include parking, and the longest walk to the sand is a little over 200 metres.⁶

If you are visiting for the day, the 290-space public car park by Praia dos Pescadores opened on 1 July 2025 on the site of the old 'As Gaivotas' football ground, east of the town. It has 8 spaces for people with reduced mobility, 4 electric-vehicle charging bays, 8 motorcycle and bicycle spaces, one coach space, video surveillance and an attendant on site, and it runs 24 hours a day. Use is charged according to the season and the length of stay, and it is run by a private operator.⁷ Street parking along the seafront exists and disappears by about ten in the morning in August.

Tide and sand

The Algarve coast is tidal and the usable width of the sand changes through the day. We have deliberately not published tide tables or a claim about how much the beach narrows at high water, because we have no source we can stand behind. Check a tide table for Portimão or Faro on the day.

What is nearby?

The chapel by the old fort is worth ten minutes: a walking visit to Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes and the hidden story of the old fort. For lunch, our ten walkable restaurants are all within a few minutes of the promenade.
